Psalms 91 – The Promise of God’s Protection and Care

psalm 91 is popular among believers for several reasons: its universal appeal, reassurance of God’s protection and care, promise of longevity and prosperity, triumph over evil, ease of memorization and recitation, encouragement to close communion with God, and versatility and adaptability. In addition, the psalm is full of vivid imagery and metaphors that make it easy for people to understand and relate to.

The psalmist (David) starts by describing the protection God provides to those who dwell with Him in His secret place, trusting and loving Him; finding their value and purpose in Him; staying connected to Him day in and out. He promises they will abide under His shadow, and He will deliver them from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. These are metaphors for any plot against them to endanger their lives — whether it be a trap or a sudden disaster.

The remainder of the psalm is filled with many more examples and descriptions of God’s protective power and care. The psalmist mentions several ways that God protects His people – like a fortress, a refuge, a strong tower and a high place in which they can hide from those who are out to harm them, a mother bird covering them with its feathers, a shield and buckler and a high wall. It is this portion of the psalm that was quoted and twisted by Satan in the temptation of Christ in the wilderness (Matthew 4:5-7, Luke 4:11-12). The promise of God’s protection and care should never be taken to mean that one will live a perfect life without any trouble or challenges, but rather that He will help us to find our way through even those times with His strength and comfort.
